We join designer Jason Lai of L2 Interiors at his home in Santa Monica. Jason embraced the mid-century origins of the residence but added a fun mix of styles inside. He admits he found designing for himself and his partner a challenge, but he overcame it by being open to ideas and curating its look.

- Hi. My name is Jason Lai. I'm with L2 Interiors. Welcome to Navy on Navy. This home was built in 1953. It's also my personal residence. Inside, you will find a Scandinavian inspired and mid century modern. I can't wait to show you my personal home. Come check it out.

We love cooking. So the first thing that we want to do is to have everything on display and everything very reachable. I love having plants in my kitchen. The plants really give a good energy to the space. My favorite part of the kitchen is the island, because it feels like a piece of furniture. It's a perfect place to gather, because when I cook, everyone surrounds it, waiting for my yummy food.

What I love about this kitchen, it's open concept, and you can see that indoor outdoor dining area, and for SoCal living, we're always outside. When you do want to eat inside, you can eat in this breakfast nook.

Color is all about fun. I like to use it in accents. Don't forget about the name of the house, Navy on Navy. The exterior color is navy. Our accent doors are navy. And this couch is a perfect complement to that pallet. The coffee table is made of marble. It's been aged to look like it's an antique.

It's very important to have different elements to ground the space. Drawing it all together, the focal point really is the fireplace. The patterns of the brick of the fireplace is also original to the house, and this large mirror is perfect for the space, and who doesn't want to check themselves out and make sure the hair is perfect?

After entertaining friends, I like to cozy up into my media room.

When designing a media room, it's all about the feeling and darkness in here. The way I cozy up the space is this really big sectional that grounds you and just makes you feel very comfortable while you're watching a movie. This color is a perfect complement for this media room. It's called Spice of Life, because it has that warm feeling it's still dark at the same time.

In the media room, I love entertaining. It makes you feel like you're in a theater. And after all that popcorn, we like to retire downstairs in our master bedroom. In here, we furnished the whole entire bedroom. We wallpapered the whole accent wall with Missoni.

The raised ceiling in here really allows us to do this custom four poster bed, which allows us space, not to feel cramped. And taking advantage of the space with these high ceilings, we put the Nielson pendant as a chandelier. And speaking of lighting, these pendants that droop down from the ceiling allows us more space on the nightstand.

To tie all the elements together, I use Spice of Life color of the year as my accent wall. I also loved it so much, I used it in my master bathroom. And finally, the best part of this master suite is I can go straight to the backyard. Through these doors, I have access to the California sun all day, every day.
